Book sessions and talks by Stephen:

In mid-November Stephen will present on a forthcoming book by Alva Noë at the American Society for Aesthetics annual conference in Savannah, Georgia.

Past events

Stephen presented about defining art and artworlds at the International Association for Aesthetics conference in Belgrade, Serbia, June 26-28.

He attended the European Society for Aesthetic meeting in Dublin on June 11-13. There he talked about the functions (as adornments) of body markings such as paints and cosmetics, tattoos and scarification.

At Stanford University, he presented to the Philosophy and Literature workshop on the interpretation of literature on May 6 and in a workshop on authenticity at the Stanford Graduate School of Business on May 9.

On April 30, Stephen spoke on the notion of psychological modernity at the University of California-Berkeley.

He presented on how we are the adorning species at San Jose University, San Francisco, on April 28.

Stephen read a paper at the conference on aesthetics held in Dubrovnik, Croatia from April 20-24. The paper was on the extent to which Balinese religion and cosmology commits the Balinese to the pursuit of beauty in almost all that they do.

He gave  talks on the nature of adornment and on the evolutionary origins of music at the University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain on April 15 & 17.

Stephen will be speaking at The American Society for Aesthetic meeting at Pacific Grove, Monterey, held April 6-7.

Stephen presented on the topic of art’s origins at the annual American Society for Aesthetics meeting in San Antonio, Texas, October 29 – November 1, 2014.

On June 28-29, 2014, Stephen took part in discussions on music studies and Hanslick in Vienna, Austria. This workshop was hosted by Christoph Landerer, University of Salzburg, and involved Alex Wilfing oif the University of Vienna.

Stephen presented “Should our heterosexual aesthetic preferences concerning the other sex be subject to negative ethical evaluation?” at the  VIth Mediterranean Congress of Aesthetics which took place at Villa Finaly in Florence, Italy, June 24-28, 2014.

On June 16, Stephen presented in a workshop titled “Tracking Artistic and Cultural Agents”, at Macquarie University, Sydney. The workshop was hosted by Nicolas Bullot of the Department of Cognitive Science. Other participants include Jerrold Levinson, Daniel Wilson, Mirko Farina, and Brendan Ritchie.

Stephen contributed to a panel on Dom Lopes recent book, Beyond Art (Oxford University Press) at the American Society for Aesthetics Pacific meeting, April 9-11, 2014, at Pacific Grove, Monterey.

On February 7, 2014, Stephen spoke at a symposium on Chauvet cave at the University of York. Other speakers were Jill Cook (British Museum and author of Ice Age Art, British Museum), Andrew Lawson (author of Painted Caves), Robin Skeates (Archaeology, University of Durham and author of Visual Culture and Archaeology, Bristol Classical Press), Andrew Needham (Archaeology, York University) and Elisabeth Schellekens (Philosophy, Universities of Uppsala and Durham). The organizers, Peter Lamarque and Greg Currie (both of York University) also spoke.

On February 12, 2014, Stephen gave a talk on the aesthetics of adornment to the aestheticians of the University of Leeds.

At the New Zealand philosophy conference, December 8-12, 2013, Stephen will give the opening address and there will be a session on  The Artful Species with Nicolas Bullot and Justine Kingsbury.

Book session on The Artful Species: American Society for Aesthetics annual meeting, October 30 – November 2, 2013, San Diego. Participants will include Ajit Varki (University of California San Diego and founder of CARTA), John Hyman (Queen’s College, Oxford) and Stephanie Ross (University of Missouri-St. Louis).

Stephen was hosted by Nicholas Bullot of the Centre for Cognitive Science, Macquarie University, Sydney on October 8-12, 2013. As well as discussing The Artful Species in a symposium on the book, he presented the paper “The Aesthetics of Human Adornment,” summarised by an attendee at Biology4me.

Book session on The Artful Species: International Society for Aesthetics, July 21-27, 2013, Krakow, Poland. Organized by Jerzy Luty, Wyższa Szkoła Oficerska Wojsk Lądowych imienia generała Tadeusza Kościuszki. Participants include Joseph Carroll, University of Missouri, St Louis, Mohan Matthen, University of Toronto, and Wilfried van Damme, Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society.
